Maine Shipyard to Lay Off Nearly 40 Workers
BATH, Maine (AP) _ Bath Iron Works is in the process of increasing the size of its workforce, but that doesn't mean it's immune from the normal ebb and flow of work as it juggles building five ships at the same time.
The company notified Local S6 of the Machinists union on Friday that it's laying off nearly 40 welders and shipfitters effective Aug. 22 because of a lack of work in those trades.
Spokesman Matt Wickenheiser said the shipyard will work to find jobs elsewhere to reduce the number of job cuts.
Overall, the Navy shipbuilder is in the process of adding 600 jobs this year. After the layoffs, the shipyard will have about 5,600 jobs compared to 5,200 at the start of the year.
